Winter team sports are most common in those countries where winters are harsh with lots of snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures. Especially common are physical activities using sleds, skis, skates, etc. However, thanks to material such as artificial ice, countries that cannot boast snowy and frosty winters have also been able to spread such sports in their territories.
In addition to the usual winter sports, such as ice hockey, skiing, sledding and ice skating, there are also unusual activities. Consider some of them. Perhaps from this article you will learn about their existence for the first time.
The game of icestock. It is also called Bavarian curling. Originally, Icestock began to develop in countries with harsh winter climates such as Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Now it is played everywhere where there are ice grounds, both natural and artificial. The essence of this game is that the players take turns launching a device called a rod on the ice court. This is a stick with a length of about 30 cm, to which is attached a metal circle, very well sliding on ice. The purpose of throwing the rod is to make it stop as close to the target as possible or fly further, depending on the type of game. Points are awarded for each throw, and the team with the most points wins.
Curling game. Just like in the previous game, the essence of curling is to launch special projectiles – stones on the ice area towards the target, which in this sport is called “home. Play two teams, each of which has four players. The winner is also determined by the number of points earned. Originated in Scotland in the early 16th century, curling today is a fairly popular winter sport. It is included in the program of the Winter Olympic Games, in addition, it regularly holds world and European championships.
Snow rugby. Popular sport in Argentina, Canada and North America. An interesting and fun team game, the essence of which boils down to the fact that players try to pass an oval-shaped ball to each other. You can do this with both hands and feet, but at the same time handing the ball is possible only to the player who is behind. The goal of snow rugby is to get the ball into the in-goal. A team gets one point for each successful attempt.
Brumbball. This game is also played on an ice surface with a goal. Play it in two teams. Each team has a goalkeeper and five field players. This sport is similar to ice hockey, but instead of a puck in this game involves a ball, instead of a stick – a stick with a tip of plastic, and instead of skates on the players’ feet shoes with rubber soles. To protect the players used the same equipment as in hockey. Throwing the ball is done in the same way as throwing the puck in hockey. The sport is popular all over the world, but most of all in Canada and North America. A world broomball championship is held every two years.
